Growing up, my mother and I lived alone in an apartment in Madrid with a very long corridor. On both sides, floor to ceiling: shelves of books. Each with a title more unsettling than the last. Legal and Clandestine Prostitutes During Francoism. The Spanish Holocaust. Sometimes the shelves were too heavy and fell.
